The twisted and enlarged varicose veins can cause pain, discomfort, and itching. There are medical procedures available to treat this condition, but if you want to get it treated within your comfort zone, you can stick to a self-care or at-home treatment plan.

Home Remedies for Varicose Veins

These home remedies can help you cope with the discomfort, pain, and other symptoms associated with varicose veins. However, they do not resolve it completely until you seek further medical treatment.

Wear Compression Stockings

Generally, the first thing that doctors advise for varicose veins home treatment is wearing compression stockings. These stockings are designed to help put pressure on your veins, which maintains blood flow and reduces swelling and pain.

These compression stockings are also recommended pre and post-surgery to reduce discomfort.

Elevate Your Legs

Keeping your legs elevated above your heart helps ease your varicose veins symptoms while improving blood circulation.

These are simple ways to improve blood circulation in your legs:

  • Try lying on your back on a bed with your feet elevated on the wall or on pillows to enhance blood flow back to the heart.
  • Elevate your legs when you are sitting.
  • Use a footrest at work and a footstool at home to keep your feet elevated.
  • Avoid crossing your legs at the knees when sitting. This ends up squeezing the veins, resulting in blocking the blood flow. If you cannot elevate your legs, place them flat on the floor.
  • Regularly stretch your legs when you sit for long periods, such as during car or plane travel, or while at work.

Avoid Long Periods of Sitting or Standing

Standing or sitting for long periods puts added stress on the veins in your legs, which can cause further swelling and pain.

  • If you stand when working, sit down for a few minutes regularly with your feet elevated.
  • If you sit when working, move around for a minute every hour to help your legs pump blood back to your heart.
  • During long flights, walk down the aisle every 40-45 minutes to reduce stress on your veins.
  • When sitting for long periods, you can rotate your ankles in a circle in both directions to enhance blood flow in your legs.

Regular Workouts

Exercise is a great way to alleviate discomfort from varicose veins by lowering blood pressure. However, to avoid aggravating your varicose veins, practice both simple and low-intensity workouts, like cycling, swimming, and walking.

These low-intensity workouts help increase your blood circulation while relieving the pain from varicose veins. Regular exercise is essential to improve blood circulation, especially if you work from home or at a desk, where there is less physical activity than usual.

If your varicose veins or related symptoms persist even after trying these home remedies, you should visit your vein doctor for further treatment.
